Mastering the skills

Pool lessons

The first dives of the course are lessons in the pool, either indoors or outdoors depending on the season. Here we teach you many useful skills which you will need when diving: How should you remove water if it entered your mask? How should you enter the water such that you won't lose pieces of your Scuba gear? What to do if you accidentally ran out of air while diving? These and many other skills will be taught in these first lessons.

For real this time

Outdoor dives

After you have completed the pool lessons and mastered the skills, it's time for some real fun! Guided by an instructor you will make your first open water dive. They'll make sure you are comfortable under water, safe at all times and will navigate during the dive. You'll spot some pike, visit the wrecks of Bussloo and have to show some of the skills - performing which is quite different when the water is not at pool temperature.

Six outdoor dives are required to finish your Open Water course. During a dive day you usually do two dives, which means you'll have to join three weekend days to complete the course.

Theory

An important aspect of the course is the theory. Here you learn everything that is needed to dive safely underwater. Amongst others it teaches about the gear, how air compresses and expands at depth, dangers and how we ensure safety. It also covers the diving hand signals - talking under water is hard, we've tried.

The theory consists of one lesson taught by one of the instructors and online course material accessible through SSI. You complete the online material at your own pace and complete a digital exam at the end. Don't worry, it's not calculus, and it's all multiple choice.
